Petrus Alamire, Gregorian Chant and Josquin Desprez’s Polyphony

Missa Pange Lingua and music from the Occo Codex

Sunday 21st September, 15.30 Sint-Antoniuskerk van het voormalig Kapucijnenklooster – Sint-Truiden (B)

[From Canto Aperto Festival 2014 PROGRAMME:] The Missa Pange Lingua by Josquin Desprez is probably his last mass. It was particularly popular in Europe (at least 26 manuscripts from that period still extant) and the scriptorium of Petrus Alamire certainly contributed to this circulation. The performance will be based on a manuscript from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and to the Mass will be added music from another Alamire manuscript, the Occo Codex. The merchant Pompeius Occo from Amsterdam commissioned this manuscript around 1530 for the “Kapel ter Heilige Stede”. It contains seven Eucharistic hymns and two masses.
